THE
HUMANE USE AND CARE OF LABORATORY ANIMALS
ANALYIS
THE
LARGER PICTURE back
The topic of humane care and use of laboratory animals falls under a large
umbrella of ethical instruction called the Responsible Conduct of Research
(RCR). Purdue's Office of Research Administration/Compliance would like
to eventually develop an entire RCR curriculum of which the modules on
humane use and care of laboratory animals would become a part.
OBJECTIVES
back
The content and goals of an orientation program for undergrads and animal
caretakers are not complicated and yet they are. PACUC/LAP wanted to cut
out extraneous material - for example, undergraduate students and animal
caretakers do not normally need to understand the protocol submission
process in great detail, however they should
- understand
what a protocol is and that one is required before animals
can be used for research and teaching on Purdue Campus.
- feel empowered
to report concerns.
- notice
immediately when an animal was not feeling well or acting normally
and to report them for veterinary care (However, behavioral
signs of illness vary from species to species and a comprehensive coverage
of the topic lay beyond the scope of a brief orientation).
- recognize
when additional training is required (as they assume new responsibilities)
and to know where to find it and how to properly add it to their qualifications.
PROPOSAL
back
This project served as my exit requirement for my Master's Program and
had to be approved and signed off by my committee. I reviewed
the literature for best practices on
- teaching
ethics,
- teaching
the
responsible conduct of research,
- teaching
the
humane care and use of research animals, and
- designing
online instruction.
Finally I
developed a proposal
with a budget and timeline for completing the project, and selected an
instructional design model to use.
